Description
A little woody shrub, lantana grows wild in the tropics of South and Central America. The spectacular, multi-colored, and long-lasting blooms of this plant have made it popular in North America. While the majority of the United States considers lantana an annual or houseplant, those in the hottest regions of the country can really grow it as a perennial.
It is recommended to cultivate lantana in a container to take care of its growth, as the plant can be invasive in warmer, tropical, and subtropical areas. It is safer to grow it in the ground in the place where it will die back in winter, as it does not spread invasively.
Before planting, make sure that the pot is only a little bigger than the plant’s current rootball. Avoid choosing a large container for your lantana because it prefers a more compact environment. Ensure that there are sufficient drainage holes in the container. To help with drainage, you might want to consider putting some little stones near the base. Plant in well-drained potting soil; add sand, perlite, or a peat moss mixture for added drainage.
