Description
The leaves are pinnately compound, which means they have leaflets that line up along a center stem. The leaves are usually bright green with a yellow midrib that stands out. The name “butterfly palm” comes from the leaves bend up, making a shape that looks like butterfly wings.
The plant stays pretty small indoors, but when growing outside, it can grow into a tall, impressive feature for tropical gardens. If you grow your areca palm chrysalidocarpus indoors, it can grow up to 7 feet tall. This makes it a best choice for a floor plant in both homes and offices. When grown outside, this Areca palm tree can grow to an amazing 30 feet tall and 12 feet wide.
Light: indirect light is best for areca palms. Put areca palm chrysalidocarpus plants near a window that lets in filtered sunlight so it can enjoy several hours of soft light in the morning or afternoon. Do not put it in full sunlight, as the leaves could get burned. If your plant leans toward the light, make sure to move it often to keep its growth even.
For your Areca palm, keep the room at a comfortable temperature, between 18°C and 24°C (65°F and 75°F). This plant does best when the humidity level is mild to high. Put a water tray next to the plant or use a fan to raise the humidity. Make sure it’s not near drafts or cold air vents.
Make sure the top inch of dirt on your butterfly palm dries out before you water it again and water runs out of the pot well so that it doesn’t build up. Regularly check it by putting your finger into the dirt to know if it is wet enough, and only water it when it feels a little dry. You should change how often you water based on the season and the surroundings.
